A pool table measures 2m by 1m. A perfectly smooth elastic frictionless pool ball at midpoint of the short side is struck at an angle (theta) to the side. For what values of (theta) will the ball eventually return to its starting point? If it does return, how many cushions will it strike before returning to its starting point?

For the first part of your problem, take a look at this book. Do the "Click to Look Inside" option. On the left, where it says, "Search Inside This Book", type in "Can you sink this trick shot?" Follow the link to page 45, and that will have the statement of the problem, as well as a solution. I'd have to think some more about the number of cushions problem.
