find each side of a cube - volume.
hi, in need to work out this question but im having some problems:
The volume of a cube = 196cm^3
Find each side.

im not sure how to work this out, i know to get the volum of a cube you need to times length by width by height.

if anyone can help could you please post!

Thanks!

Well, what do you know about cubes? What's the definition of a cube?
• Dec 15th 2010, 07:29 AM
andyboy179
i know a cube has 6 sides

You know more than that. A rectangular prism has six sides, but is not necessarily a cube. What's special about a cube?

?? i don't know.

From the wiki on cubes:

Quote:

In geometry, a cube is a three-dimensional solid object bounded by six square faces, facets or sides, with three meeting at each vertex.
Now, what kind of faces does the cube have?

6 faces with three meeting at each vertex.

That's correct, but not all. What else do you know about the faces?
• Dec 15th 2010, 07:48 AM
andyboy179
they are bounded.

Well, the object is bounded, that's true. But in the definition above, I want you to take a close look at every single word that has anything whatsoever to do with the faces of the cube. What shape are they?

"6 square faces"

Ah. There you go. And the sides of a square are ... what?
• Dec 15th 2010, 07:55 AM
andyboy179
equal
• Dec 15th 2010, 08:00 AM
Ackbeet
So what does that tell you about all the sides of the cube?
• Dec 15th 2010, 08:04 AM
andyboy179
all the sides of the cube must be equal
