Well I dont know about him, But I have a review problem for my final in calculus 4 that asks that question and states nothing else...So I am assuming you can do it whichever way? But I have no clue how to do it.
Solution using calculus.(see attach) Using geometry is easy. Surface area is 4 pi radius^2, since the radius is 1, the answer is 4 pi
