Hey yal, I'm doin some geometry homework ,here and i have a question on one of the problems.. here's a link to the pic.

I'm trying to solve for x and y but i'm having trouble finding them... can someone show me how to do this... ? thanks.

2. opposite sides of a rectangle are equal ...

$3x=2y+1$

diagonals of a rectangle are equal ...

$4x-2=y+6$

solve the system of equations for x and y. I recommend solving for y in terms of x using the second equation and substitute the result into the first equation.

3. I should've been more clear, i meant how do you solve for x and y considering that they are different variables. So...

4x-2=y+6

and

3x=2y+1

pretty easy stuff, i know... i just forgot some of this and i want to get this homework done lol...

4. 3x = 2y + 1
4x - 2 = y + 6

or

3x - 2y = 1 ..... (1)
4x - y = 8 ..... (2)

Multiply 2nd eq. by (-2):

3x - 2y = 1
-8x + 2y = -16

adding both eq. -->

-5x = -15 ---> x = 3

substitute x = 3 in 1st eq. --->

9 - 2y = 1
2y = 8 ---> y = 4

i am having a similar problem. and i was lookin at how you worked that out, i was curious as to why you didn't negate the 1 and 2?
