    Land question

    If there is a piece of square land, which is 7450 miles squared and you wanted to cross from the very left to the very right in a straight line how many miles would you travel?

    How long would it take to travel this route at 80mph ?

    Thanks alot

    1. Geometrically you want to know the length of the diagonal of a square.

    Let s denote the length of one side of the square and A the area of the square.

    Then

    s = \sqrt{A}

    According to Pythagorean theorem the length of the diagonal is:

    d = \sqrt{s^2+s^2} = \sqrt{2A}

    2. Since the speed is \dfrac{distance}{elapsed\ time} the traveling time is:

    time=\dfrac{distance}{speed}

    For confirmation only: I got t = 1 h 31 min 33 s
