Re: Proving by induction help

Hi again jpab29

My apologies. The formula $\displaystyle \sum^n_{i=1}(2i-1)^2=(n-1)^3+n^3$ is totally wrong!! I must have had a brain freeze. The correct formula for the sum of the squares of the first n odd numbers is:

$\displaystyle \sum_{i=1}^n(2i-1)^2={n(4n^2-1)\over3}$

This really can be proved by induction.

Re: Proving by induction help

Thanks so much!

I tried to do it this way like this video:

Proof by Induction - Example 1 - YouTube

It's what I have been doing.

i can only do the left side, but not the right side.

But anyways, it's past 12midnight and it's time for me to say goodbye to this chapter of the book. I did not complete all my homework but at least I got some answered, with everyone's help. Thanks so much!
