Could you remind what expanded notation is? Is this number in hexadecimal? Then why is h lowercase while A and D are uppercase? Do your textbook or lecture notes describe how to convert numbers from hexadecimal to decimal?

Good point. The trailing h probably is a sign that the number is in hexadecimal. I would prefer writing it as 0xA9D6 according to the notation in many programming languages.
