    Help with examples of functions

    Hi guys,

    can someone tell me where to start with this problem??

    For the following give an example of a relation which is not a function and a relation that is a function

    Let A = R and B = Z where R stands for real numbers and Z stands for integers

    my professor gave an example of an answer as y = f(x)
    f: R --->Z
    when f(x) = 2

    I really dont know what this means??

    Thank you in advance

    f(x) = 2 is a function that takes any real number as input and produces the integer 2 as output.

    You could read about functions in Wikipedia. I would say that the concept of a function is not really a university-level topic. You probably should read a textbook or ask in the Pre-Algebra and Algebra forum.

    Edit: Here is a couple more links to Dr. Math about functions and functions vs. relations.
