This is probably a very stupid question, but I don't know where to begin. I need help proving that 1/2 < 1.

Try drawing a square of unit length and filling it in.

Then draw another square of unit length and fill half of it in.

Clearly since the second has less area filled in than the first, then $\displaystyle \frac{1}{2} < 1$.

To use another method...

$\displaystyle 0 < \frac{1}{2}$ since $\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}$ is positive.

$\displaystyle 0 + \frac{1}{2} < \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2}$

$\displaystyle \frac{1}{2} < 1$.
