assuming you have written this correctly:
(i) can be re-phrased: |u|,|w| < |y|,|v|
this is easy, note that if you have a vector of the form (a,0), its norm is |a|.
(ii) you can use a similar trick for this, as well. note that (a,0).(b,0) = ab.
