What does this symbol mean?

Hello

I've seen the notation $S^1 \vee S^1$ in the context of topology, but I don't know what it means. I know what $S^1$ is, just not what the symbol $\vee$ means in this context.

in your example, $S^1 \vee S^1$ is (equivalent to) a figure-8.
