This seems like a really stupid question, but I don't even know where to begin. How would I go about proving that 1/2<1?

Well, I'd say the method of proof would likely vary depending on what foundations you're using. I would say something like this: 1/2 < 1 if and only if 1 < 2. The latter is true because 2 is the successor to 1 in set theory.
