Thread: partial differential equation

Hallo.
I want to solve a PDE. However I'm not sure if the way I want to do this is correct.

I don't know why, but my Latex Compiler here didn't work. So, I wrote my question in the attached file.

I would be inclined to try Separation of Variables, but my knowledge of PDEs isn't very thorough...

I tried to use the Principle of Separation of Variables, but it didn't work. Maybe I've done some mistakes, because I'm really not very familiar with PDEs. So, I'll try it again.

The way you solve the system is the way you did! Pick the first order one first and substitute the solution into the second order PDE. You're actually lucky that there is a solution that satisfies both.

So, you think my approach yields in my special case to the correct solution.
But in the majority of cases, systems of second order PDEs have to be solved numerically. Am I right?
Is there a book about PDEs which you can recommend to beginners?
