Thread: finding the absolute extrema

This is the problem:

Locate the absolute extrema of f(x)= x^3 - 3/2x^2 on the interval [0,4].

The absolute min/max on a closed interval either occurs at a relative maximum/minimum or at an endpoint. Take the derivative, set it equal to zero and solve for critical points. Test endpoint values and you should have all the info you need.
