I missed the notes in class for this section, but as I go through the chapter in the book, I find myself getting lost. Any help would be appreciated.

If the first term of the geometric series is a and the ratio is r < 1 then

$\sum_{k=0}^{+\infty} ar^k = \frac{a}{1-r}$
