Solving word problem - how fast is distance changing
I think my biggest problem is that I don't know what I am solving in the real world when I solve an equation so I have no idea how to layout the problem to now do the math.
Here is what I know
- a particle is moving along a curve
curve is y= 2(x^3) - (x^2)
one point on the curve is (2, 12) and its x-coordinate increases at a rate of 4cm/s
Question: How fast is the distance from the particle to the origin changing at this instant?
I am sure I will find the derivative which is y' = 6x^2 - 2x but I really don't know what to do from there.
Guidance is appreciated. I am exhausted so I will be reading replies tomorrow - if you could lay out the steps of what I am solving I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
