    Simple arc length question

Are the arc length formulas for parametric and standard equations valid for lines that go beneath the x-axis? I'm asking this because I know definite integrals consider anything below the x-axis as opposite to over the x-axis. Cheers.

relationship of the curve to the x-axis doesn't matter.
