Minimization problem - please help!

A 3 feet piece of wire is cut into two pieces and one piece is bent into a square and the other is bent into a equilateral triangle. How should the wire cut so that the total area enclosed is minimized? (Hint: Area of a square of a side a is a² and area of an equilateral triangle of side a is (radical 3)/4 * a²)

Consider a cut made at x length from one side. Now you have two pieces x and 3-x. To make a square you need to have 4 sides of equal length, so divide the segment by 4 and for the triangle divide by 3. Now make a general area function for the sum of both areas in terms of x.
