to find $u_x = \frac {\partial u}{\partial x}$, differentiate with respect to $x$, treating all other variables as constants.

do an analogous thing for $u_y$ and $u_z$

how is it 1??

$\frac d{dx} x^n = nx^{n - 1}$, for n a constant.

as for y and z, ask yourself, how would i differentiate something like

$\frac d{dx} a^{x/c}$ and $\frac d{dx} a^{c/x}$

where $a>0$ and $c$ are constants?
