    Find the first partial derivatives of the function.

    u = x ^ (y/z)

    to find u_x = \frac {\partial u}{\partial x}, differentiate with respect to x, treating all other variables as constants.

    do an analogous thing for u_y and u_z

    Right but how? Would be 1? And then I dont get how you would do y or z ...

    how is it 1??

    \frac d{dx} x^n = nx^{n - 1}, for n a constant.

    as for y and z, ask yourself, how would i differentiate something like

    \frac d{dx} a^{x/c} and \frac d{dx} a^{c/x}

    where a>0 and c are constants?
