# Thread: Calculus I easy question?

1. ## Calculus I easy question?

My calculus teacher gives us online quizzes about the material we are supposed to learn the next day. This is only the first week. Here is the question:

Compute.

lim ((x^2)-9x+2)
x->5

2. Just plug in 5 for x and it will give you your limit

3. so the answer is -18?

yes

5. heres the second question. i did the same thing but you cannot divide by zero, so what's the answer here?

lim ((x^4)-16)/(x-2)
x->2

6. Hint: Factor the numerator as much as possible. $x^4 - 16 = \underbrace{{\color{red}(x^2 - 4)}(x^2 + 4)}_{\text{By Difference of Squares}} = \hdots$

Factor the red by the difference of squares and see what cancels Then try to evaluate
