They are exams taken at the end of secondary schooling in the UK which are
    sort of University Qualifying exams.

For example when I left school I had A-levels in Maths (as two subjects) and
Physics, which was (is?) typical for students intending to read Maths or Physics
(and a lot of Engineering sub-fields as well). Notionally these were the only subjects
studied in the last two years of secondardy education ( a fiction of course, what I
studied in my last years in secondary education bears as much resemblence to
what A-levels I have as what I studied as an undergraduate does to my degree
    transcript).
