tangent plane to a scalar field

    Hey guys

I've having a bit of a problem with the following question and i was hoping someone could help.

Hopefully i've attached the question and what i've done so far but i've been told its not the right method to use. I've looked through some other posts on here and can't find anything that would work. I'm not looking for someone to do it for me just some pointers would be nice. Thanks alot
