i started off by taking u=x+12 and x=u-12
but from there everything just gets complicated. is there a formula for this or a way that does not take up 2 pages

Try the substitution u^2 = 12 + x.

Note that:

1. x = u^2 - 12.

2. dx = 2u du.

Then use partial fraction decomposition.
