You've neglected an extremely important piece of information .... derivative of e^{-u} with respect to what variable? u? x?

The derivative of e^{-u} with respect to u is -e^{-u}.

    The derivative of e^{-u} with respect to x is -e^{-u} \, \frac{du}{dx}.
