Optimization
A contractor wishes to brace a newly built wall by supporting it with a wooden beam. Unfortunately, the new wall is only 4 feet from a 5 ft. high fence and so the beam must go over the fence as shown in the sketch below. Determine the length of the shortest beam that can be used.
