ahhh I figured it out, I was calculating -e^-0 as -1, when really it is 1.

Actually, $-e^{-0} = -e^0 = -1$. You had that part correct. Your derivative was not correct: $\dfrac{d}{dx}(e^x - e^{-x}) = e^x + e^{-x}$
