Limits and Hybrid Functions

Hi all,

Just a quick question on how to find the limit of a hybrid function. (Got a test soon)

My textbook says the answer is 1, but I'm not sure how to get to that.

The question is:

lim f(x) where f(x)= 3x+1, x≤0

x goes toward 1 x^2, x>0

A limit can only exist at a point if the function approaches the same value if you close in from the right as you do if you close in from the left. So see what value the function goes to from the left (i.e. along the first function) and what value the function goes to from the right (i.e. along the second function). If they are the same, then the limit exists and equals that value.
