    University Grade Average

    Hi everybody

    I'm not entirely sure if this is where I should post but It seemed the most relevant. Some friends and I are finishing up on our MSc degree in the UK and we naturally want to find out our grade average. I've put together an Excel sheet which calculates how many credits of each module we take we've obtained. However I've only managed to provide a sum of credits we currently have and not what our overall average is or what marks we need to get on our remaining assignments to get a desired final grade.

    Above is a link to the excel sheet. Could someone help me work out a formula to calculate the % value of each module and also how to calculate the average of our grades? I have to admit I normally hate maths and putting this together was the result of procrastinating instead of studying for finals!

    Hey renzakuken.

    In terms of the % Take the module value and divide by the total sum of the module values (180) and then multiply that by 100 to get a percentage. So % = (Module Value)/180 * 100 = (Module Value) * 5/9.

    The average of anything is just the value of thing divided by the sum of all values.

    Hey Chiro

    I really appreciate you getting back to me so swiftly, I'm terrible with maths so thanks to you I've now learnt something new!

    With regards to the average mark a friend's worked mine out to be 61. (something...) however if i take the current credits that I've currently obtained, sum them then divide by the modules (56.93/8) I get 7.12. Where abouts am I going wrong here?

    You need to weight the marks by the weighting of each credit.

    The weights of each credit is simply the score of one credit divided by the total scores of all credits combined.

    You then calculate weight_of_credit*mark_for_that_unit and add them all together.

    Could you possibly provide me with an example?

    An example with three weights 10, 20, 30. With marks of 7, 8, and 9 out of 10, the weight mark is

    WM = 10/60 * 7 + 20/60 * 8 + 30/60 * 9.

    Re: University Grade Average

    See I gave that a go;
    Module 1 through 4 is worth 20 credits, 5 is 10, 6 is 20 again, 7 is 10 and my thesis is worth 60. So with your suggestion the formula should go like so:

    20/180*62+.... so on and so on. However I end up with 31.61.
    20 = Credit of Module 1
    180 = Total credits available
    62 = my grade in the assignment for that module

    What are the actual marks you get?

    For example if you have something worth 20 credits, is the final mark out of 20 or is it something else?

    The module is worth 20 credits but the coursework or exam is marked out of 100.

    Re: University Grade Average

    So for that one if its 20 credit points out of 180 and the mark is out of 100, then the weighting will be 20 * mark/100.

    I actually made a mistake and normalized the credit score which mean everything was between 0 and 1 (which could later be converted to a percentage).

    If you want a percentage divide the final score by total credit points and multiply by 100.
