    Optimization

    "A cylindrical can has a radius of 4cm. and a height of 12.2cm."

    2. Determine the dimensions that will minimize the amount of material needed to construct a can with your volume.
    (a)equation to be minimized.
    (b)calculus solution with minimum dimensions.
    (c)Justification of why it is a minimum.

    (a). (2)πr^2 +2πrh
    (b). I have trouble with. The equation to be optimized is the volume of a cylinder. But what would it be constrained by?

    Your constraint would concern the volume of the can, which is fixed. You want to minimize the surface area, since this is what determines the amount of material needed.
