    differential equations( need help)

    for what values of r does the function e^rx satisfy the differential equation
    y"+5y'-6y=0?

    try the solution y = e^{rt}

    thus we obtain the characteristic equation:

    r^2 + 5r - 6 = 0

    now, simply solve for r
