# Thread: Even and Odd Asymptotes

1. ## Even and Odd Asymptotes

I was wondering if even and odd asymptote classification was used for all asymptotes or just vertical asymptotes? I've looked through the internet and through my textbook, but I can't seem to find it.

I have never heard of asymptotes being classified as even or odd ...

I have heard of vertical, horizontal, and slant asymptotes.

I suspect (I also had not heard of that classification) that a vertical asymptote, at x= a, is "even" if f(x) goes to infinity (or negative infinity) from both sides as x goes to a and "odd" if f(x) goes to infinity from one side and negative infinity from the other. I don't see how it could make sense for any other than vertical asymptotes.
