Or $\displaystyle \frac{x^2}{x+ 4}= \frac{x^2- 16+ 16}{x+ 4}= \frac{x^2- 16}{x+ 4}+ \frac{16}{x+ 4}$$\displaystyle = \frac{(x- 4)(x+ 4)}{x- 4}+ \frac{16}{x+ 4}= x- 4+ \frac{16}{x+ 4}$.
