Try $\displaystyle x=\frac{u^2}2 -\frac1{\color{red}2}$.

Wouldn't it be
$\displaystyle
u= \sqrt{1+2x}
$
$\displaystyle
u^2=1+2x
$
$\displaystyle
u^2-1=2x
$
$\displaystyle
x= (u^2-1)/2
$
