    direction of steepest ascent

OK, so I know the directional vector equals the magnitude of the gradient but how do I find direction. I really have no idea how I would go about finding it

The gradient gives the direction and magnitude of steepest ascent. If you just want the direction (a direction is a magnitude-1 vector), just divide the gradient by the magnitude of the gradient.
