    coutours

    given that f(x,y) = x^4 + y^ 4 -4xy+4

    how do you plot contours for this function so as to show how this function looks like?

    what i tried was to let x=0, then z = y^ 4 +4 parabola
    let y=0 such that z=^4 +4 parabola

    and then let z=0...but i do not know how the function will look when z=0.

    after doing these 3 parts, how do i find the contours?

    or is there another simplier method to do this?

    thansk!

    A parabola? Sort of...

    Zero is nice, but you WILL need a few more values.

    Alternatively, of course, you could get some awesome software.

    may i know what software you are using?

    suppose that im asked to plot this function in my exam, then how do i go about with it without a software program?

    1) Mathcad 14.0 M020
    2) That was the first two comments. Try a few more values and use all your analytical skill in discerning what it is you are looking at. This one looks a lot like a basket. See the nice wide bottom and then quickly rising sides?
