Replace $\displaystyle x$ with $\displaystyle 3x$, so you obtain $\displaystyle \lim_{x\to \infty} (1 + 11/3x)^{x}$. Now remember how the limit of $\displaystyle (1+x/n)^n$ is related to $\displaystyle e^x$...
