Smile finding one sided limit[no graph]

sorry i'm at work atm but i was wondering if anyone could explain how to find any one sided limit of a function who's one sided limit is not positive or negative infinite....i know u can use the sign rule(not sure if thats what it's called) to find if the limit is headed toward infinite or negative infinite without drawing the graph(has a V/A)...sorry if i'm not clear :O -thx
