1. ## [SOLVED] Extra Cred Minimum Area problem (oil can)

I've attached my work

An oil can is to be made in the form of a right circular cylinder to hold one quart of oil. What dimensions of the can will require the least amount of material?

i know i havent finished the problem but what i have returns an incredibly small height for the cylinder. Where have i gone wrong?

your last calculation for r is incorrect.

$\displaystyle r^3 = \frac{115.5}{4\pi}$ ... this is ok, however

$\displaystyle r \ne 11.32$

3. oh wow thanks. i must have entered it into the calculator incorrectly.
