I was wondering, how does one enter the equation for for example descartes folium, if one wants to graph it on TI-84 plus?

Not much chance using the Cartesian form unless you want to solve for y and get the three different branches using the cubic formula .... Even then there are certain problems ....

I'd suggest going to parametric function mode and using the parametric equations. Those equations can be found here.

1. Set the TI83/84 to parametric mode.

2. Use the equation you found at the link Mr. Fantastic gave you.

3. I've attached a screenshot what will happen for a = 1

(The invisible settings in the window are: ymin = -3, ymx= 3, yscl = 1)
