Thread: TI-89 Trouble

I don't know how this happened but my TI-89 wont return decimal answers when i try to divide numbers.

For instance:

Problem 8/2
Answer 4

but

Problem 7/2
Answer 7/2

I only get whole number quotients.

I've been looking through the TI-89 manual for hours and while I've learned a great deal I still can't find a way to change this. I have a feeling it has something to do with MODE and Floating but Ive already set that to 6.
I can't find a way to reset the default settings either.

Can anyone help me? Please.

Either press Diamond (the green key) ENTER or change your mode to 3: Approximate.

Thanks that definately helped.

It appears that pressing the diamond key changes the mode for current calculation while pressing the "mode" key, pressing "f2" to get to the second page, and changing "exact/approximate" to "approximate" is permanant (until you go into "mode" again, of course).

Hello,

Sometimes, it's useful to decide when you want an exact value and when you want an approximate value. So maybe it's better to get the approx value whenever you want.

An alternative solution is to put a decimal number in your operation (for example 7/2. ) and it'll give the approximate value

Moo beat me to it with the decimal after the number.

Yet another reason why the 89 infuriates me.
