the loungeware dept had customer returns at 10.5% and net sales of $635,380. as the buyer reviewed last years figures for the same period, the customer returns were 12.5% with gross sales of 726,149. compute the departments performance in dollars and percentages for this yr and last yr. in regards to gross sales, customer returns, and net sales. 2. compute the departments performance in dollars and percentages for this yr and last yr. in regards to gross sales, customer returns, and net sales.
ALWAYS

Net Sales = Gross Sales - Returns = Gross Sales - (Gross Sales * Return Percentage)

Keep this in mind.

In the first, we are given Net Sales. You must find Gross Sales.

In the secind, we are given Gross Sales. You must find Net Sales.

Let's see what you get.

3. ok so would you do this,

635380-.105= 635380- (635380 x 10.5)

4. No. First, thes "635380-.105" doesn't mean anything related to the given problem.

Look VERY carefully.

Net Sales = Gross Sales - Returns = Gross Sales - (Gross Sales * Return Percentage)

Substitute what you have been given. Don't make it up.

10.5% and net sales of $635,380. Net Sales = Gross Sales - (Gross Sales * Return Percentage) We have Net Sales =$635,380. This gives:

$635,380 = Gross Sales - (Gross Sales * Return Percentage) We have Return Percentage = 10.5%. This gives:$635,380 = Gross Sales - (Gross Sales * 10.5%)

Now solve for Gross Sales.

In the second problem, you are given Gross Sales and you must solve for Net Sales.

Be deliberate and systemetic. Don't try to do it in your head. Do NOT be afraid to write things down in great detail. Let the notation help you.

Finish this one and then show us the second.

5. ok so this is what i did

635,380 = gross sales-(gross sales x 10.5)

635,380 = 1-10.5

and then customer returns is 1270770.5 i got that by doing

635 390.5 - C = 635,380 and then adding 635390.5 to both sides..

the 2nd problem i did
net sales= 726,149 - ( 726,149 x 12.5)
= 726,149 - 9076862.5
but then that gives a negative number so i did something wrong and i don't know what

No good. Where is the %?

635,380 = 1-10.5
No good. Where did the Gross Sales go?

No good. How did 9.5 turn into 10.5? On the other hand, it is nice to see that Gross Sales have returned.

and then customer returns is 1270770.5
No good. With Gross Sales of under \$700,000, how can there be returns of over 1,000,000? This should be a giant alarm and you should not be satisfied with this answer. Answers should be reasonable.

You must have learned some algebra. You have not demonstrated it here. It isn't like throwing darts. There are specific rules and you must follow them. One rule that you many not have encountered is simply to WRITE OUT every step. Let the notation help you.

First, copy the problem correctly.

635,380 = gross sales-(gross sales x 10.5%)

Second, state and use the correct principles. In this case, let's use the Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition to "factor out" the Gross Sales on the right-hand side.

635,380 = gross sales(1-10.5%)

Transform the percentage to the more useful decimal form

635,380 = gross sales(1-0.105)

635,380 = gross sales(0.895)

Division

635380/0.895 = Gross Sales

Finish this one up. Look how clean and concise everything is. See how the steps were revealed before they took place and what I said took place exactly as I said it. See how easy it is to follow? If there is an error, it is easily found because it is right there on the page.

Do the next one once you get this one wrapped up.

7. ok 2nd problem heres what i did

net sales= 726,149- (726,149x.125)
= 726,149-90768.63
=635380.37

8. Very nice. Now to the actual questions...
