    Take the prime decomposition of the two numbers.

    96=(2^5)x3

    120=(2^3)x3x5

    so the hcf is (2^3)x3=24

    I take from the solution that "hcf" is "highest common factor" or some such? I've never heard of the term before.

    hcf - highest common factor, same thing as gcd - greatest common divisor
