i've worked it out mult. ways and i keep getting stuck.
please if i can have some guidence one how to start it, to make sure i'm on the right track.

Maybe the reason that you are getting stuck is because you don't have to factor at all.
$\displaystyle (3x-4)-(5x-8)=-(x+12)-6+1$
$\displaystyle 3x-4-5x+8=-x-12-6+1$
$\displaystyle -2x+4=-x-17$
$\displaystyle x=-21$
