I would break up the area into sections as described by mr fantastic, demonstrated by the attachment.
A follow-up question on the matter: is it possible to somehow reach a definite "smallest number of rectangles needed" ? Just out of the top of my head, I can't find a solution with less than 3 rectangles
Three looks like the smallest number of rectangles the figure can be divided into.
