    percentages without calculator

    Hi.

I am really struggling to find a way to work out how to do percentages, via pencil and paper. Is there a simple way/method for me to use that I could apply to the following problem:-

    25% of 4.99

    Your help is much appreciated.

    25% = 1/4

Use basic division to find the answer of 1.2475 = 1.25 since we can only have 2dp in currency

    hi
    here's a Trick
if you wanna find the 21 \% of 4.99 :
    you know that 21 \% = 10 \% + 10 \%+ 1 \%
    10 \% of 4.99 is equal to 0.499.
    1 \% of 4.99 is equal to 0.0499.
    so 21 \% of 4.99 is equal 0.499+0.499+0.0499 = 1.0479.
