    4+5y= 39

    answer to you question

    first you minus 4 of the total answer
    which leaves you 5y =35
    then you divide 35 by 5
    which leaves you with the answer of y equals 7

    There's no such thing as "the total answer".

    You need to subtract 4 from "both sides of the equation".
