Thread: Need help with integer Problem

I was assigned two of these problems for my homework, and i have no clue what i am suppose to do. These are typed exactly as they appear on my worksheet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1.)

(+ + 5 - - 4 + - 5) - (+ - 2 + + 6) - (7 + 4 + -5)

2.)

(+ - 6 - - 5 + 6) - (- - 7 + - 4 + 6) - (- - 8 + - 5 - + 7)

Lacking any instructions or definitions, I'm afraid I have no idea what you're supposed to do, either!

It looks as if you are to simplify:
Since a double negative = a positive and since + is normally assumed and not explicitly written:

(+ + 5 - - 4 + - 5) - (+ - 2 + + 6) - (7 + 4 + -5)

The symbols in blue denote operation while the symbols in red denote the sign of the number.


( 5 + 4 - 5) - ( -2 + 6) - (7 + 4 -5)

extend the operation across the parenthetical value

( 5 + 4 - 5) - - 2 -+ 6 - 7 -+ 4 --5

double negatives = + and then remove positive signs

5 + 4 - 5 + 2 - 6 - 7 - 4 + 5

All of the numbers are positive and the plus/minus signs now are operations.

I do not have a high performance computer available to calculate that sum.

It looks as if that is what is wanted.
