    Help with word problem.

    I can not figure this out... Can someone exlpain how to work out this problem. Im new to this forum...this is a great resource.

    If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?

    rate sally works ... (1 job)/(4 hrs)

    rate john works ... (1 job)/(6 hrs)

    rate together ... \left(\frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{6}\right)

    (rate together)(time in hrs) = 1 job done

    \left(\frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{6}\right) \cdot t = 1

    solve for t
