    We have,
    $\displaystyle x+y=5$
    $\displaystyle x-y=2$
    Add,
    $\displaystyle 2x=7$
    $\displaystyle x=3.5$

    Substitute into first equation,
    $\displaystyle 3.5-y=2$
    $\displaystyle y=1.5$
    Thus,
    $\displaystyle xy=(1.5)(3.5)$
