    Please help - complicated D=RT problem

    I just can't figure out how to set this problem up. Is it a quadratic equation? Please help.

    Gail drives 10 miles per hour slower than Dexter. With two more hours of driving time, Gail travels a total of 330 miles, compared to Dexter who travels 260 miles. Find the speed and time traveled for each.

    I would appreciate any help. Thank you so much.

    Hi IrishBecca,

    Ok, let's set it up.

    Let r = Dexter's rate
    Let t = Dexter's time
    Let 260 = Dexter's distance

    Let r - 10 = Gail's rate
    Let t + 2 = Gail's time
    Let 330 = Gail's distance

    D = rt

    (1) rt=260

    (2) (r-10)(t+2)=330
    ------------------------------------------

    (1) r=\frac{260}{t}

    (2) \left(\frac{260}{t}-10\right)\left(t+2\right)=330

    Solve (2) for t, then substitute back into (1) to find r.
